Interview questions and answers in Kenya: TSC, KRA and county panels

By Rahul Iyengar · Last updated

Kenyan interview panels, from TSC and KRA to county boards, attachments and internships, expect you to answer out loud: tell me about yourself, why this role, what you know about the organisation. Read the short answers below, then practise each question on your phone. SpeakUp scores your pace, fillers, pauses, structure and content in seconds.

There is no accent score, and the score is not a prediction of whether you get the job. It tells you how the answer came across, and one thing to fix next.

Written for Kenyan graduates, teachers, students on attachment and anyone facing a panel interview in English.

The eight questions, answered

Each answer is what to have ready. Tap the practice link under it, aim for about 60 seconds, then read your feedback.

How do I answer “Tell me about yourself” in a Kenyan interview?

Keep it to about a minute: who you are, what you studied or do now, one thing you did that you are proud of, and why you want this role. End on the role, not on your hobbies.

PractiseTell me about yourself and what makes you a good candidate.

TSC interview questions: what should I have ready?

Have a clear answer to why you chose teaching, one example of helping a learner who was struggling, and what you know about the subjects you will teach. Say the first one out loud until it comes out in under a minute.

PractiseWhy did you choose teaching as a career?

KRA interview questions: what should I have ready?

Have an answer to why you want to work at the Kenya Revenue Authority, and be able to explain one part of the job you are applying for in plain words, as you would to a taxpayer.

County government panel interview: how do I prepare?

Know the county you are applying to: what it does, its main economic activity, and one challenge it faces. Then say in a sentence or two how the role you want would help with it.

PractiseWhat do you know about this county, and what is one challenge it faces?

Attachment interview questions

Say what you have studied so far, what you hope to learn during the attachment, and one thing you can already do for the organisation. Be specific about the learning; “experience” on its own is not an answer.

PractiseWhat do you hope to learn during this attachment?

Internship interview questions

Expect a version of “why should we give you this internship?”. Answer with one skill, one example that proves it, and what you want to learn there.

Ajira Digital and online work: how do I introduce myself to a client?

A short call or a recorded introduction may be all an online client hears from you. In about a minute, say what you do, one job you finished and what it achieved, and how you work with clients.

PractiseDescribe your skills to an online client in 60 seconds.

After KUCCPS placement: why did you choose your course?

An attachment or first-job panel may ask why you chose your course. Say why you chose it, or how you came to like it if you were placed in it, and what you want to do with it next.

Uganda: the same questions work

Preparing for a panel interview in Uganda, for a district or public service job, an attachment or an internship? The questions above work the same way: read “county” as your district, and practise “tell me about yourself” first.

What the AI listens for

  • Pace. Words per minute, and where you rushed.
  • Fillers. “Um”, “like”, “actually”, “you know”. Counted, not guessed.
  • Pauses. A pause that lands a point counts for you; a long stall counts against you.
  • Structure and content. Did the answer open, make its point, and close, or trail off?

Not scored: your accent. And no score here predicts what a panel, a recruiter or a visa officer will decide.

Works in Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone. Nothing to download. Start without an account. Your recording is sent to the United States to be transcribed and scored; what we keep.

Questions people ask

What does SpeakUp score, and what does it not score?
It scores your pace in words per minute, filler words such as "um", "like" and "actually", your pauses, and an AI read of the structure and content of your answer, then gives you one thing to fix next. There is no accent score. It does not know what an interview panel decides, and its score is not a prediction of whether you get the job, the attachment or the placement.
Does my accent affect my score?
There is no accent score, and nothing here asks you to change how you sound. The scores are built from a transcript of what you said, so if the transcript mishears a word, the counts built on it can be off. Your transcript is shown with your feedback, so you can check it.
Where does my recording go?
It is sent to the United States, where our transcription provider (AssemblyAI) turns it into text and SpeakUp scores it. For a practice without an account, we don’t keep your audio on our servers, or your full transcript, just the phrases your feedback quotes. The details are on our privacy page.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It runs in Chrome on Android and in Safari on iPhone. There is nothing to install. If the browser asks for microphone permission, tap Allow; if you tapped Block earlier, the page shows you how to turn it back on.
Do I need an account?
Not for your first answer. Tap a question, record, and read your feedback. To record again, create a free account (email and password). No card, no paid tier.
Is it really free?
Yes. There is no paid tier. Every feature on speakupcoach.com is free.
How do I speak confidently in English in an interview?
Slow down, pause instead of saying “eh” or “like”, and finish each answer with a full sentence instead of trailing off. Then record yourself answering a real question and look at the numbers: words per minute, filler count and pauses.
Is SpeakUp connected to TSC, KRA or a county government?
No. SpeakUp is an independent practice tool. It is not affiliated with any employer or public body, and it cannot tell you whether you will be hired.
